BN 17th Street Yard Office and Oil Shanty Bike at Superior, Wisconsin in August 1970...

The Burlington Northern’s original yard office in Superior, Wisconsin was a series of buildings that predecessor Great Northern cobbled together in 1945 at 17th Street and Elmira Avenue. During the 1970s and early 1980s, this was the nerve center for trains arriving and departing from Superior. Road and local service cabooses were parked on the east side of the yard office waiting for their next turn out of town or across town on a transfer run. This view was taken looking south from the old Belknap Street viaduct. That’s the old 21st Street viaduct in the background. Note the blue X-119 caboose at right. Overflow parking for cabooses was provided on one of the steel shop leads when cars going into the steel shop for repair weren't blocking it from being used for this purpose. We hope you enjoy this image today. Cheers!
